In part two of this series, started yesterday, exploring whether SEO or optimization for human readers is more important – we’ll go over things from the human readership perspective.
If you didn’t read yesterday’s article about the importance of smart SEO – or SEO for the right keywords – you may go read Search Engine Optimization or Reader Optimization – Which Is More Important? now or you can read this article first and then circle back for yesterday’s free SEO tips article when you’re done here.
Web Design for the End-User
Designing from the perspective of the end user of a website is important. All the traffic in the world wont help your business if the human readers cannot easily navigate or enjoy your site.
That said, focusing too much on the cool-factor for the end user may do you a disservice. Flashy sites are cool to look at, but if the search engines can’t read them (and they usually can’t read flash-based sites) you wont get natural search engine traffic.
Does that mean you should never do a flash site? No. Flash sites are great for businesses that are already household names or are searched for by their domain name.
For most small businesses and most of your web design clients, a flash site will be impressive – but they wont get the natural search engine results that will bring them traffic and ultimately money. Search engine results are crucial to most e-commerce. Sites that ignore the importance of how they rank in search engines will wind up spending a LOT more on advertising to get visitors.
